Asahi Ditches Virgin Plastic for 100% Recycled Bottles in Australia
Asahi Beverages has made a significant move towards sustainability in Australia by transitioning to 100% recycled plastic for its soft drink bottles. The change affects over 350 million bottles produced each year, excluding caps and labels. Asahi's Australian range includes brands such as Schweppes, Solo, and Pepsi.
The shift is the result of a joint venture with other companies, including Cleanaway Waste Management, Pact Group, and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, to establish recycling plants in Albury and Melbourne. This initiative has increased the volume of recycled plastic produced domestically and allowed Asahi to source more material for its bottles locally.
Asahi's CEO, Amanda Sellers, emphasized that this move not only benefits the environment but also makes financial sense. The company aims to secure its supply of plastic bottles into the future and embed sustainability into its strategy, systems, and processes.
