ASME Hosts First International Conference in India: Modernizing Mechanical Engineering Education
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) recently hosted its first international conference in India, MEEd India 2026, at Anna University in Chennai. The symposium brought together experts from academia, industry, and engineering students to discuss the future of mechanical engineering education.
With a focus on Industry 5.0 and Generative AI (GenAI), the event explored how to modernize mechanical engineering education through data-driven design optimisation, model-based systems engineering, mechatronics education, and AI in engineering education.
The conference featured sessions with representatives from MathWorks, Collins Aerospace, Caterpillar, TVS Motor Company, and IIT-Madras. Speakers included MathWorks' GenAI expert, who discussed the importance of integrating GenAI into mechanical engineering education.
The symposium followed ASME's 'ASK' model, which aims to bring academia, students, and industry together to address capability gaps and faculty upskilling in India-specific engineering skills roadmaps. MEEd India 2026 is expected to draw over 3,000 delegates and 500 authors from around the world.
Initiatives such as ISHOW, a hardware accelerator that supports ventures globally with equity-free seed funding, and 'Brain Bolt', a national engineering make-a-thon, were also showcased at the event. These projects demonstrate ASME's commitment to innovation and collaboration in the field of mechanical engineering education.
