Athletic Retail Stocks Tumble on Dick's Sporting Goods Earnings Warning
Dick's Sporting Goods reported weaker-than-expected quarterly earnings and warned of rising inventory levels forcing heavy promotional discounting across the athletic retail sector. As a result, shares of various athletic footwear and apparel makers retreated.
Figs (NYSE:FIGS) fell 3.8%, Caleres (NYSE:CAL) dropped 3.6%, Nike (NYSE:NKE) declined 2.6%, Genesco (NYSE:GCO) lost 3.4%, and Funko (NASDAQ:FNKO) decreased 3.7%.
The weaker-than-expected earnings and inventory concerns have intensified investor worries about persistent headwinds in consumer discretionary spending. However, some analysts suggest that big price drops can present opportunities to buy high-quality stocks.
