Atlas Air's $7 Billion Bet on Airbus
Atlas Air Worldwide has signed a $7 billion deal with Airbus to purchase 20 firm A350F freighters, along with an additional 20 options worth around $14 billion. This is the company's first major order from Airbus and marks a significant shift in the freighter market.
The Boeing 747-8F, once the gold standard of cargo jets, has been discontinued since 2023 due to declining demand. Meanwhile, Boeing's replacement for the 747, the 777-8F, is years behind schedule with an entry-into-service date now set for 2029.
Atlas Air's decision to switch to Airbus is a major blow to Boeing, which has dominated the large-freighter market for over five decades. The A350F carries 109 tonnes of cargo and burns fuel more efficiently than older models, making it an attractive option for carriers like Atlas Air.
