August Layoffs Hit US Companies Across Multiple Industries
More than twenty US companies have filed notices of planned job cuts in August, according to public Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filings. Among them are retail giants Walmart and Amazon, as well as logistics company FedEx.
The layoffs span various industries, including retail, logistics, manufacturing, media, and healthcare. WARN notices are typically required when a company with 100 or more employees plans to cut at least 50 jobs in a single event or site closure.
Walmart accounts for several California filings, while FedEx is closing its Phoenix LUFA facility as part of its Network 2.0 program, affecting around 101 courier staff. Amazon has also been cutting jobs, removing over 30,000 corporate roles since October last year, with AI being a significant factor in the reductions.
The August layoffs follow a heavy July, which saw more than 37,500 job cuts across 42 companies, driven largely by German carmakers and tech firms citing AI as a reason for the cuts. Independent trackers estimate that the tech sector has lost over 170,000 jobs so far this year.
