Aurora Accelerates Driverless Trucking Deployment and Pricing Plans
Aurora Innovation highlighted its progress in driverless trucking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference 2026, where it discussed its shift from demonstration to deployment.
The company's July launch of driverless operations without an observer marked a major turning point, according to CEO Chris Urmson. This milestone has helped convert skepticism into interest among customers and regulators, with strong customer enthusiasm for the technology.
Aurora is expanding its operating design domain, including roads that lead to customer endpoints, towns, and populated areas. The company expects 20-25 driverless trucks on the road by month-end and about 200 by year-end, with a phased hardware plan cutting costs and improving durability through partnerships with Fabrinet, Roush, and AUMOVIO.
The company is preparing to move from Transportation-as-a-Service to Driver-as-a-Service in 2027, where customers would own the trucks and pay Aurora a subscription-style fee for autonomous driving. Pricing for this model is expected to exceed $0.85 per mile, supported by cost savings on human drivers and improved fuel efficiency.
