Australian LNG Prices Expected to Stay High Amid Strong Demand
Chevron Australia's Balaji Krishnamurthy expects LNG prices to remain high for at least six months. Speaking at the Gastech conference in Bangkok, he stated that it's difficult to see prices drop during this period.
The reason behind the high prices is that Australian LNG is fetching a premium due to its shorter distance to Asian buyers. Chevron has been benefiting from this stronger pricing environment, which has been amplified by the decrease in exports from Qatar. The country previously accounted for about one-fifth of the world's LNG exports.
Krishnamurthy notes that while there may be some short-term demand adjustments, he sees new growth opportunities on the horizon. He points to the rise of artificial intelligence as a potential driver of LNG demand, particularly with regards to data centers in Australia. Additionally, customers are increasingly prioritizing energy security and seeking long-term supply deals.
As a result, Krishnamurthy expects that the market may stay tight rather than tip into oversupply. This could have implications for companies with exposure to energy or industrials that ride LNG trends, particularly those who can secure multi-year deals and serve Asia efficiently.
