Avelo Airlines' East Coast Strategy Gets a Boost from Tweed-New Haven Airport Runway Extension
Avelo Airlines has been operating out of Tweed-New Haven Airport (HVN) since 2021, using its Boeing 737-800s to connect New Haven with destinations across the East Coast. The airport's short runway, measuring only 5,600 feet, has presented a challenge for Avelo, as it limits the capacity of the 737-800s and forces the airline to operate at reduced passenger loads.
The FAA approved an extension of Runway 02/20 in December 2023, but the project faced legal challenges before being cleared to proceed. The runway will be extended by 975 feet, allowing Avelo to operate its full-capacity 737-800s and increasing the airport's commercial viability.
The benefits of the extension are twofold: it will enable airlines to operate longer routes with more passengers onboard, and it may also attract new service to the airport. Additionally, the FAA notes that extending the runway would result in fewer flights than if the extension was denied, as airlines would need to increase frequencies otherwise to meet demand.
