Azure Backlog Surges to $678 Billion Amid AI Infrastructure Boom
Microsoft's commercial cloud backlog has reached $678 billion, representing an 84% year-over-year growth for Azure. This significant increase is a key indicator of AI infrastructure demand and marks a turning point in the company's ability to deliver capacity to meet contract commitments.
The report comes just months after analysts warned that capacity limits were capping Azure's growth. However, with new capacity catching up, revenue growth accelerated to 43% in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026.
Notably, Microsoft's backlog growth peaked at 110% in the second quarter, far exceeding revenue growth. By the fourth quarter, backlog growth cooled to 84%, while revenue growth picked up pace.
This surge in demand is reflected in the company's capital spending, which is estimated to reach $175 billion for calendar year 2026, primarily directed towards data centers and AI accelerators.
