Azure Powers Planet DDS' Rapid Growth and Cost Savings
Planet DDS has dramatically improved its infrastructure efficiency by moving to Microsoft Azure. The company can now provision new customers in just one day, down from six weeks. This speedup is thanks to a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) workflow established using App Service and modern deployment practices.
The team can deploy new versions of applications using staging slots, which are tested in production without affecting users. As a result, deployment cycles have accelerated by 75%, enabling faster delivery of new capabilities without downtime. The development team is also much happier being able to deploy during business hours instead of scheduling late-night deployments.
The move from on-premises hardware to Azure has also reduced costs for Planet DDS. Instead of paying for infrastructure around the clock, the platform scales up during business hours and down overnight, minimizing overprovisioning. This approach reduces total cost of ownership by about 40% while minimizing the costs of maintaining physical infrastructure.
The unified infrastructure now serves as a foundation for data-driven dentistry initiatives at Planet DDS. The company can provide more consistent reporting across practices and give DSOs (dental service organizations) a clearer, near real-time view into performance. This groundwork also establishes the prerequisites for advanced analytics and AI in the future.
