Bakari Takes the Helm as New Leader of Disney's Animal Kingdom Gorilla Troop
Bakari, a 21-year-old western lowland gorilla, has taken over as the leader of Disney's Animal Kingdom's family troop at Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. The silverback arrived from another AZA-accredited zoo, where he spent time socializing with other males in a bachelor group.
The transition marks the end of an era for the troop, which was led by Gino for nearly 30 years since the park's opening. Animal care manager Rachel described the change as 'bittersweet,' but expressed excitement to see Bakari grow into his new role.
The introduction of Bakari to the family troop is a gradual process, with the gorillas initially meeting through a protected viewing area. The animal care team has been monitoring their interactions and guiding them towards closer contact.
