JPMorgan Chase's $750 billion investment in affordable housing is part of a larger trend where banks are partnering with developers to build multifamily developments. The bank's 'American Dream Initiative' aims to finance 1 million affordable housing units and help 500,000 buyers purchase homes over the next decade.

The initiative focuses on local-level economic development and addresses two key issues in the US housing market: affordability and supply. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, emphasized that 'housing has two issues: One is affordable, so we're doing a lot of affordable housing... The other one is supply.'

The bank's investment will be directed towards affordable developments in cities like San Francisco, where the cost of living is high. Olivia Barrow Strauss, vice president of housing at JPMorgan Chase Policy Center, noted that 'capital alone won't solve the country's housing affordability challenges.' She emphasized the need for strong policy to accompany funding.

The Community Reinvestment Act requires banks to provide financial support to low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. JPMorgan Chase has been complying with this law by backing affordable housing developments and providing resources to homebuyers.
