Behind the Magic: How Disney Brings Stories to Life
Disney Worldbuilders is a new film directed by Leslie Iwerks that explores how The Walt Disney Company turns world-class storytelling into immersive experiences. At D23, five of Disney's top storytellers joined Iwerks on stage to discuss their work. Josh D'Amaro, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, explained that 'a great story doesn't end when the credits roll.' It continues in real-life experiences like theme parks and resorts.
Iwerks was inspired by a photograph of Walt Disney riding the mine train through Nature's Wonderland. She wanted to know what it felt like for him to experience his own creations with families and leaders around the world. The panel discussed how their work is not just about creating stories, but also bringing them to life in tangible ways.
Pete Docter from Pixar noted that transitioning from screen to reality can be overwhelming. Jared Bush from Walt Disney Animation shared a personal experience of visiting Zootopia at Shanghai Disney Resort for the first time and being brought to tears by its authenticity. The panel emphasized the importance of collaboration between storytellers, Imagineers, and cast members.
