Benton Township Man Shot by Police After Assault Incident
A man was hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in Benton Township, Michigan on September 4, 2026. The incident occurred near a Home Depot store on Pipestone Road when police responded to a reported assault around 8:30 a.m.
According to the Berrien County Sheriff's Office, officers tried to contact the man, who was inside a van, but he pointed a gun at them. He then exited the vehicle and ran into a wooded area, prompting a perimeter and K-9 search.
A member of the Tactical Response Unit found the man, still armed, and shot him after he refused to comply with orders. The man received medical attention and was taken to a local hospital by Medic 1.
The Michigan State Police are investigating the incident, but have not released the identities of the individuals involved.
