Berkshire Hathaway Invests Heavily in Alphabet, Making It Top Holding
Greg Abel, Berkshire Hathaway's designated successor as CEO, has made a significant investment in Alphabet (GOOGL), pouring $17 billion into the company during the second quarter. According to the Q2 2026 13F filing released last week, Abel purchased 24,541,369 new GOOGL shares and 23,603,218 new GOOG shares.
The combined Alphabet stake now makes it Berkshire's top holding, with a market value of approximately $17 billion. This investment is notable, as Berkshire rarely stakes such a large amount on a single stock in a quarter. The timing of the investment also fits the company's fundamentals, with Alphabet reporting Q2 2026 revenue growth of 24.2% year over year and trading at a trailing P/E of 17.
Abel is underwriting Google Cloud alongside search, which grew 82% year over year to $24.77 billion in Q2. The company also disclosed a cloud backlog of $514 billion. This investment aligns with the AI thesis, which has a cloud backbone.
