A man was shot and hospitalized after a standoff with police in Benton Township on Thursday.

The incident began around 8:30 a.m. when officers were called to the Home Depot access drive near Pipestone Road for a reported assault, according to WSBT 22.

Police say the man had fired a firearm at a woman and pointed it at responding officers before fleeing into nearby woods.

A K-9 search was conducted, and a member of the Berrien County Sheriff's Office Tactical Response Unit found the man while he was still armed. The TRU unit shot him, and he received medical attention on the scene before being transported to Corewell Health Lakeland's St. Joseph Hospital.

The incident remains under investigation by Michigan State Police, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in the state.
