Bethesda's Yearly Layoffs: A Shift from Stability to Uncertainty
Bethesda Game Studios, known for titles like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, was once a stable workplace where employees could plan to retire. However, since Microsoft acquired the studio in 2021, the company has transformed into one with yearly layoffs, according to former employees.
A lead character artist at Bethesda, who has worked there for several years, described this change as 'markedly different' from the previous sole ZeniMax ownership. The employee noted that long tenure was common under ZeniMax, but after Microsoft's acquisition, 'we didn't have layoffs before, and now... we have yearly layoffs.'
The changes are part of a broader business 'reset' described by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. However, union representatives argue that the company framed the changes differently internally.
Morale among collective efforts to combat these cuts appears to be rising, despite day-to-day work morale being at an all-time low, according to Nathan Hahn, who has spent four years at Bethesda Game Studios.
