Bezos' Amazon Fortunes Fuel Blue Origin's Ambitious Space Plans
Jeff Bezos' investment strategy has been to sell Amazon shares to fund his private space company, Blue Origin. In 2018, he stated that he was liquidating about $1 billion a year of Amazon stock to fund Blue Origin, and he planned to continue this process for a long time. At the time, these comments sounded ambitious, but nearly a decade later, they have largely become reality.
Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000, years before commercial spaceflight became a competitive industry. He financed the company himself by steadily selling Amazon shares, and his investment pace has tracked closely to his initial plan of selling about $1 billion in AMZN stock annually. Industry estimates suggest that Bezos has invested around $28 billion to $30 billion of his own money into Blue Origin through mid-2026.
In 2026, Blue Origin raised outside capital for the first time, with a funding round reportedly valuing the company at about $130 billion. Bezos remained one of the largest backers, committing an additional $2 billion alongside institutional investors.
