Bezos Sells Billions as Amazon Hits $3 Trillion Milestone
Amazon's market capitalization surpassed $3 trillion for the first time on Monday, August 3, following a strong earnings report that beat expectations. The company's stock price closed at $284.02, up 4.58% for the day, and has climbed 25.40% year-to-date.
In the same news cycle, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos filed to sell around $4 billion of his own shares under a pre-scheduled trading plan. The sale was part of a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted in November 2025, which allows for regular sales of shares over time.
CNBC's Jim Cramer described the timing as a 'buzzkill', noting that Bezos's decision to sell billions of dollars' worth of Amazon stock on the same day it reached $3 trillion in market capitalization was awkward. However, Cramer acknowledged that Bezos has the right to diversify his wealth and noted that the sale was part of a pre-planned program.
Amazon's earnings report showed strong growth in its cloud computing business, AWS, which saw revenue grow 37% year-over-year to $42.2 billion. The company also raised its full-year capital expenditure guidance to around $220 billion, citing higher memory costs and continued investment in AI infrastructure.
