Big Banks Join Affordable Housing Push with $750 Billion Investment
The largest US banks are investing heavily in affordable housing initiatives, a surprising trend that could benefit both banks and residents struggling to find affordable homes.
JPMorgan Chase announced it will direct $750 billion to US housing projects through 2035 under its 'American Dream Initiative', which aims to finance 1 million affordable housing units and help 500,000 buyers purchase homes over the next decade.
This investment is the largest ever made by JPMorgan in homebuilding initiatives. Bank of America has also committed $42 billion in financing for affordable housing efforts between 2020 and 2025, while Citi has pledged $60 billion to housing affordability efforts between 2026 and the early 2030s.
The banks are partnering with developers to help cities build multifamily developments from the ground up. This collaboration could benefit both banks and residents in expensive cities seeking an affordable home.
