Big Thunder Mountain Closes Again Amidst Frontierland Transformation
The Magic Kingdom's Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed again, just over a year after its major refurbishment and reopening. The attraction was unavailable during the afternoon of August 25, 2026, with Disney displaying a message through the My Disney Experience app apologizing for the unexpected closure.
The notification read: 'On behalf of the entire team at Magic Kingdom, I'd like to apologize that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently unavailable. Our Cast Members are working diligently to get this attraction up and running again.' As of August 26, Big Thunder Mountain remained listed as 'temporarily unavailable.'
This latest closure comes amidst a larger transformation in Frontierland, which is being replaced by Piston Peak National Park, a massive new Cars-themed expansion. Disney is also creating a new visitor lodge and Ranger HQ to help establish the land as an actual destination within the story of Magic Kingdom.
