Birmingham Police Officer Fatally Shoots Man After Chase
A security guard at a McDonald's restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama provided new details about an incident that led to a police officer fatally shooting a man. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon around 12:35 PM at the McDonald's location in the 2700 block of University Boulevard.
The security guard told ABC 33/40 that the man had allegedly assaulted a McDonald's employee by trying to hit them on the hand while buying a drink. However, the alleged assault was not captured on the restaurant's surveillance video, which does show the man being escorted out of the establishment.
According to police, an officer attempted to make contact with the man after the security guard identified him. The man then ran across the street and resisted when the officer tried to detain him, leading to a foot chase into the north parking deck at UAB St. Vincent's.
During the chase, the officer gave verbal commands and deployed his taser, but the man tried to gain control of it. The officer then drew his gun and fired, striking the man. Emergency personnel responded, but the man died at the scene.
