Blind Machinist Sues Boeing Over Job Denial Amid Safety Failures

Jonathan Ott, a blind machinist, is suing Boeing after being removed from training despite accepting a job offer in 2023. According to his lawsuit, Boeing refused to accommodate him with accessible software solutions. Ott has a decade-long record of building Boeing parts and claims he was unfairly placed on unpaid leave due to 'safety risks' associated with forklifts and machinery.

Boeing denies offering Ott the Composite Fabricator C role and argues that he required constant sighted assistance, which they deem unreasonable. However, Ott's prior employer says Boeing explicitly rejected hiring blind workers, highlighting a potential systemic issue within the company.

The lawsuit comes amid ongoing FAA scrutiny over Boeing's manufacturing defects and safety failures. The FAA has previously penalized Boeing for quality violations, including misdrilled holes and falsified inspections. Recent incidents include missing bolts on a MAX 9 and improperly torqued fasteners on 787s, prompting FAA-mandated inspections of 471 MAX aircraft.
