Boakai Praises Liberian Football Icon JNJ for Decades of Service
Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai paid a courtesy visit to legendary football icon Josiah Nils Johnson, affectionately known as 'JNJ', at his residence in Gardnersville on September 5, 2026.
Johnson is a celebrated figure in Liberian football history, having played for the national team, Lone Star, from 1958 to 1971 and serving as head coach from 1971 to 1978. During his coaching tenure, Liberia achieved historic victories over Ghana and participated in the 1979 Six-Nation Tournament.
President Boakai expressed admiration for individuals who have contributed to the development of sports in Liberia, stating that honoring them is a national responsibility.
The President also acknowledged that he had not forgotten Johnson's invaluable contributions to the country, which included serving as Deputy Minister of Sports. He assured JNJ and his family that immediate government support would be provided to address their challenges, including improvements to their home.
