Boeing 727: The Trijet That Revolutionized Air Travel
The Boeing 727 was a game-changer in aviation history, bringing fast and modern air travel to ordinary people and cities. With its unique design featuring three engines clustered around the rear, it became a familiar sight in airports worldwide.
The brainchild of Boeing engineer Jack Steiner, the 727 aimed to break jet travel out of major hubs and make it accessible to smaller cities. To achieve this, Steiner designed a wing with high-lift devices, including triple-slotted flaps, that enabled the plane to land on short runways.
The strategy worked, with Boeing producing 1,832 units between 1962 and 1984. The 727 remained the world's best-selling jetliner until its smaller sibling, the 737, surpassed it in sales. One of its notable features was its self-reliance, equipped with a built-in auxiliary power unit and airstairs that allowed it to turn around at modest airports without external assistance.
The Boeing 727 also left an indelible mark on aviation history due to its association with one of the most infamous hijackings in American history. In 1971, D.B. Cooper hijacked a 727 and parachuted out, sparking a massive investigation that remains unsolved. Boeing later installed a device known as the 'Cooper vane' to prevent the aft stairs from opening in flight.
