Boeing 737 MAX Safety Concerns Reignited by New Netflix Documentary
A new Netflix documentary has reignited concerns about the safety of Boeing's 737 MAX aircraft. The film, 'Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing,' examines the company's history of safety failures and features testimony from former quality staff who faced resistance or retaliation after raising safety concerns with management.
Boeing has pushed back on the film's claims, stating that some allegations are unfounded and others have been thoroughly addressed. The company has made significant changes to its software and training programs since the 2018 and 2019 crashes that killed 346 people.
The 737 MAX was grounded for nearly two years after the crashes, but returned to service in late 2020 with redesigned software and additional pilot training. In January 2024, a door plug blew out mid-flight on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9, but investigators found that it was caused by a factory quality lapse rather than a design flaw.
Despite the incidents, aviation regulators have not suggested that current production-standard 737 MAX aircraft pose an elevated safety risk to passengers. The FAA and EASA continue to require enhanced inspection and reporting measures as a condition of Boeing's ongoing production increases.
