Boeing 737 Turned into Artificial Reef Off Vancouver Island
A Boeing 737 aircraft has been transformed into an artificial reef off Vancouver Island in Canada. The plane was intentionally sunk on January 14, 2006, to create a habitat for marine life. Volunteers spent hundreds of hours cleaning the fuselage before it was placed in the Strait of Georgia.
The location was chosen because the seafloor was previously devoid of marine life due to decades of pollution from forestry industry waste. Since its sinking, the site has become home to over 100 documented species of marine organisms, including rockfish, cod, and octopuses.
The project has turned the sunken airliner into a popular dive site, drawing attention to the restoration of marine ecosystems. It's part of wider efforts to increase biodiversity in regions where natural reefs have been damaged by human activity.
