Boeing 737 Vulnerability Exposed: $100 Device Can Hijack Plane's Systems
Cybersecurity researchers have revealed a potential threat to aircraft safety by demonstrating how a $100 device can be installed on a Boeing 737 in just 60 seconds. The device, which is made with off-the-shelf components, plugs into the plane's Open Maintenance Connector (OMC) and can override the Flight Management Computer's signal, sending fake information to the cockpit display.
The researchers, from the University of California, San Diego and Oberlin College, tested their attack on a mock-up of a Boeing 737's avionics. They warned that this new threat vector is cheap, quick, and easy to execute, making it potentially accessible to malicious actors.
Boeing has stated that there are defenses in place to mitigate this attack, but the researchers' findings highlight a previously unaccounted for vulnerability in aircraft security. The team emphasizes that they do not believe this is an imminent threat, but rather a warning to account for this new risk.
