Boeing 737 Vulnerability Exposed: Researchers Hack Aircraft Communications
Researchers at UC San Diego have demonstrated that it's possible to take control of a Boeing 737 aircraft's communications systems using a custom-made hardware device.
The proof-of-concept attack, which was presented at the USENIX Security Symposium in Baltimore on August 13, involved plugging the device into a maintenance port located under the plane's nose. This requires access to the aircraft when it's parked or in an airport hangar during regular maintenance.
Once plugged in, the device can take over communications between two key onboard computers: the flight management computer and the computer that displays critical flight data for pilots. The researchers were able to change the plane's flight path and modify sensitive data, such as weight and balance information.
The attack requires significant planning and engineering work ahead of time, but it highlights a previously overlooked vulnerability in aviation cybersecurity. The Boeing 737 is one of the most widely used aircraft in commercial aviation, with over 8,000 in service today.
