Boeing 747 Pilots Fly Wrong Route, Declare Fuel Emergency in Texas
A Silk Way West Airlines Boeing 747-8 freighter declared a fuel emergency after flying over 200 miles off course to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) instead of its intended destination, Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), on August 4, 2026.
The aircraft had departed Mexico City Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) with a scheduled 90-minute flight time but ended up circling near DFW at an altitude of 5,000 feet. The crew initially requested to land at Houston Intercontinental, despite being told by air traffic control that they did not have sufficient fuel for the journey.
A language barrier may have contributed to the confusion, with English not being the first language of the pilot handling radio communications. However, it was clear that a series of errors had occurred, including the crew's acceptance of a descent to 5,000 feet hundreds of miles from their filed destination without questioning the sequence.
Air traffic control intervened and declared an emergency on behalf of the crew, diverting the flight to DFW where it landed safely. The controller's decision was widely praised for its quick thinking and professionalism.
