Boeing 777 Takes Flight as NASA's New Airborne Research Laboratory
NASA has unveiled its new Boeing 777-200ER airborne research laboratory, replacing the retired Douglas DC-8. The aircraft will be used for atmospheric projects and other environmental studies by NASA's Langley Research Centre in Virginia.
The Boeing 777 was acquired from Japan Airlines and underwent extensive retrofitting by L3Harris Technologies before being repainted with a new NASA livery. It is currently undergoing modifications, including the installation of nadir and window ports, power systems, data communication systems, and instrument operator accommodations.
The aircraft's first mission, NURTURE, will study severe winter weather and Arctic systems in early 2027. The Boeing 777 has a range of 2,700 nautical miles and an endurance of 18 hours, allowing it to collect data across North America, the Arctic Ocean, and Europe.
The project aims to improve forecasts of severe winter weather by investigating atmospheric disturbances near the Arctic and their interaction with mid-latitude air masses. The Boeing 777's long range will enable scientists to sample emerging storm features three to five days in advance, tracking them from inception to their downstream impacts.
