Boeing 777X Delivery Delayed Again, Now Slated for 2027

The Boeing 777X, touted as one of the most impressive long-haul aircraft in the sky, has slipped its delivery date yet again. Originally due to enter service in 2020, the program has been plagued by certification issues and regulatory scrutiny since its first flight in January 2020.

Emirates, the largest customer with over 200 orders, is feeling the delay the most. The Dubai carrier has poured billions into refreshing its existing A380 superjumbos and 777-300ERs while it waits for the 777X, taking Airbus A350-900s to plug the gap in the meantime.

For Boeing, each slip costs money, with the company booking billions in additional charges against the program. The latest estimates run into the low billions of dollars. The delay has also handed Airbus a competitive edge, as it continues to pull ahead of Boeing on orders and deliveries.
