Boeing 777X Program Plagued by Delays, Raises Concerns About Aircraft Age

The Boeing 777X program has been plagued by delays since its announcement in 2013. Despite high demand and firm orders, certification issues have pushed back delivery dates for nearly a decade.

Airlines are concerned that the aircraft's cutting-edge technology may be outdated before it even enters service. The program was initially expected to deliver the first 777X models in 2020, but those plans were derailed by the Boeing 737 MAX crisis and subsequent scrutiny from regulatory agencies.

Boeing built over 30 early versions of the 777X that have been sitting in storage for years. The manufacturer would need to either rework these aircraft or write them off as losses. Emirates, the largest customer with an order for 270 aircraft, has expressed concerns about receiving early-built models due to their age and condition.

The airline's president, Sir Tim Clark, announced that they will reject 10-11 of the early 777-9 models. The issue is not only the aircraft's age but also the cost of reworking them to meet certification standards. Despite these challenges, Boeing remains optimistic about the program's future and has a Q2 2027 delivery date in sight.
