Boeing 777X Takes Off Only with Wings Fully Extended
The Boeing 777X has a unique design feature that requires its wingtips to be fully extended and locked before takeoff. If pilots fail to do so, the onboard systems trigger audible warnings and block engine power application, preventing the plane from taking off.
This safety measure is in place due to FAA rules, which prioritize aerodynamic efficiency and structural safety during flight. The 11-foot folding wingtips must be extended within a few seconds via hydraulic actuators made by Liebherr-Aerospace.
The design also improves fuel efficiency by 10-12% compared to older models, reducing drag and increasing lift. Additionally, the wingtips allow gate compatibility at airports designed for smaller jets, a key consideration in Boeing's development process.
