Boeing 777X Wings Fold to Fit Existing Airports

The Boeing 777X has designed folding wingtips to reduce its ground span and fit existing airport gates, avoiding restrictions faced by the A380.

The 777X's wingspan of 235.5 feet in flight makes it technically an ICAO Code F aircraft, but the folded wingtips shrink its footprint to 212.8 feet within Code E limits.

This feature was engineered after Boeing observed that the A380's adoption stalled due to infrastructure costs.

Airports like Sydney can now accommodate the 777X without reconstruction, allowing airlines to maintain route flexibility and avoid costly gate upgrades.
