A Boeing test pilot explained at the Dubai Airshow in November 2025 that the wingtips are part of the pre-departure configuration checks, similar to setting the flaps.
The pilots control the wingtips via a dedicated overhead switch and can extend them with escalating levels of alert. Once extended, they are electronically isolated and mechanically locked for fail-safe protection.
