Boeing 787 Dominates High-Altitude Airports with Advanced Design
The Boeing 787 has outperformed older widebody aircraft at high-altitude and high-temperature airports, such as Bogotá (8,361 ft) and Mexico City (7,316 ft). Its composite build, powerful GEnx or Trent 1000 engines, and efficient wings allow it to carry full payloads in thin, hot air.
This performance edge is due to the aircraft's design features, which include a 50% composite airframe. This enables airlines to operate at maximum capacity on long-haul routes from these hubs, making them more viable than before.
However, when compared to newer rivals like the Airbus A350, the 787's advantage narrows. Both aircraft share similar design traits, including composite structures and high-thrust engines. When choosing between them for hot and high routes, operators must weigh payload capacity, range, and fuel efficiency.
