Boeing 787 Technical Fault Causes 40-Hour Delay for Biman Passengers in Rome
A technical fault on Biman Bangladesh Airlines' Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner led to a 40-hour ordeal for hundreds of passengers at Rome Fiumicino Airport.
The flight, BG306 from Toronto to Dhaka, made an emergency landing in Rome after about 8 hours in the air. The plane's air conditioning was reportedly not functioning properly during this time.
Upon arrival, at least 174 passengers were unable to obtain hotel accommodation due to issues with Italian immigration authorities refusing to allow those without necessary visas to leave the airport. Passengers holding Canadian or US passports were able to clear immigration and stay in hotels.
The disruption proved particularly difficult for elderly passengers and families with young children, who struggled to access essential items like medication and baby food.
Repairs on the plane continued throughout Saturday night, with local engineers initially unable to resolve the problem. Biman eventually sent spare parts and two additional engineers from Dhaka, which allowed the repairs to be completed.
