Boeing Brings Aerospace Expertise to Golf with Callaway XR 16 Drivers

Callaway Golf has collaborated with Boeing to develop its new XR 16 and XR 16 Pro drivers. The partnership between the two companies brought together engineers from Boeing's O.N.E. (Opportunities for New Engineers) group, who were tasked with designing an aerodynamically sound driver. According to Evan Gibbs, head of metal woods at Callaway Golf, the collaboration was a great opportunity for both companies.

The Boeing engineers worked on the project for 3-4 months, creating an add-on for the crown of the drivers. Adam Clark, a Boeing Aerodynamics Engineer, explained that there are similarities between the aerodynamic puzzles of airplanes and golf drivers, citing laminar and turbulent flow as key factors. The solution was to streamline the driver head, reducing friction.

Callaway's new drivers were put to the test in the 2016 Gear Trials: Best Drivers Club Test, where they received a total of six medals (1 Gold Medal, 2 Silver Medals, and 3 Bronze Medals). The partnership between Boeing and Callaway has resulted in faster and more efficient drivers for golfers.
