Boeing Cargo Deal with Ethiopian Airlines Nears Completion
Boeing is poised to sell up to 10 long-haul cargo planes to Ethiopian Airlines, according to industry sources. The deal would involve two of Boeing's current-generation 777F aircraft and eight to 10 of its delayed new 777-8F freighter model.
The order comes as Ethiopian Airlines plans to establish a new hub in Africa, competing with Gulf carriers. The airline already operates 12 similar 777F cargo planes, three Boeing 767 freighters, and four converted 737s on medium routes.
Boeing is seeking a waiver from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deliver another 35 777F freighters, citing strong demand and a delay in 777X certification. The FAA has not yet made a decision on the request.
