Boeing Cargo Plane Declares Emergency After Flying Hundreds of Miles Off Course

A Silk Way West Boeing cargo plane mistakenly flew hundreds of miles off course from Mexico City to Dallas instead of Houston, declaring a fuel emergency with only 30 minutes of fuel remaining.

The flight, operated by Azerbaijani cargo carrier Silk Way West Airlines, ended up travelling to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport after the pilot's confusion about their location was revealed during communication with air traffic control.

The plane had only 6,000 pounds of fuel left when it declared 'Pan-Pan' three times over the Dallas area, signalling an urgent situation that needed attention but was not life-threatening. The pilot persisted in requesting vectors to a runway at the Houston airport despite being hundreds of miles off course.

Air traffic controllers ultimately decided to divert the plane to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport after the pilot urged them for a 'shortcut' route to Houston, but the pilot remained unaware of their actual location.
