Boeing Ditches Air Taxi Venture Wisk Aero in Strategic Portfolio Shake-Up
Air taxi venture Wisk Aero has been sold by Boeing in a strategic move to refocus on its core businesses. The aerospace giant is prioritizing commercial aerospace, defense, and space as it continues efforts to stabilize its finances and streamline operations under CEO Kelly Ortberg.
Boeing will receive an equity stake of nearly 20% in Archer Aviation after the deal closes, valued at over $1 billion based on Archer's share price. The company had previously been funding Wisk, but the air taxi venture was seen as a costly distraction by industry analysts, consuming Boeing's money and management attention without providing a clear near-term return.
Richard Aboulafia of AeroDynamic Advisory said the deal should be viewed differently from Boeing's sale of Jeppesen, which provided a significant cash injection. The Wisk transaction allows Boeing to transfer financial and managerial burdens while retaining exposure to emerging technology through its stake in Archer.
