Boeing Engineers Reject Contract Offer Amid Mistrust
Boeing's engineers and tech workers have rejected the company's latest contract offer. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), Boeing's white-collar workers' union, had initially endorsed the proposal but ultimately decided it wasn't enough for their members.
The union is now surveying its members to understand their concerns and will take their feedback into consideration during the next round of negotiations. However, one thing is clear: union members do not trust Boeing's management. According to SPEEA spokesperson Bryan Corliss, this lack of trust stems from nearly 30 years of changes since the Boeing-McDonnell Douglas merger.
Corliss pointed out that union members have seen job erosion, quality declines, and safety concerns during this period. He added that the 'no' vote on the contract offer puts a work stoppage on the table after the current contract expires on October 6th.
Boeing has responded by saying it will implement its contingency plan, which includes diverting funds from investments in workers to prepare for potential strike action. In a statement, Boeing vice president Ben Nimmergut emphasized that the company's priority is maintaining momentum and progress over the last two years.
