Boeing Engineers Reject Contract Offer, Threaten Strike Action
A labor dispute is brewing at Boeing, one of the US's leading aircraft manufacturers. The Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) union has announced that its members have overwhelmingly rejected a new collective bargaining offer from management.
The proposed contract, which would have run for four years, was voted down by 64% of engineers and scientists and 71% of technical specialists within the company. Approximately 90% of eligible voters supported granting the union leadership the mandate to call strikes if management did not present substantial revisions to the contract offer.
The union attributes its members' dissatisfaction to past experiences, including job cuts due to outsourcing and relocation of tasks outside of Washington state. Employees also criticize salary developments, which have not kept pace with inflation rates in recent years.
