Boeing Faces Past Whistleblower Claims in New Netflix Documentary
A new Netflix documentary, Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, is shedding light on past whistleblower claims against the company as it ramps up production. The film focuses on John Barnett, a former Boeing quality manager who became a prominent whistleblower and died by suicide in 2024 while involved in a legal case against Boeing.
Barnett's story is central to the documentary, which explores incidents where employees believed safety and quality controls had declined within the company. Interviews with Barnett and other former quality workers describe encountering resistance or threats of retaliation after raising concerns with management.
Boeing spokespersons have stated that the allegations in the film are largely unfounded claims that have been widely reported over the years, while others were issues thoroughly addressed by the company under regulatory oversight.
The release of Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing coincides with Boeing's efforts to recover from past crises. The company has recently reported stronger aircraft deliveries and a growing backlog, with commercial airplane deliveries rising to 171 in the second quarter of this year compared to 150 in the same period last year.
Boeing is also expanding production in Washington state, including opening a new 737 MAX production line in Everett. The expansion is expected to help increase output to 52 airplanes per month from its current pace of 47 and meet Boeing's backlog of approximately 4,300 aircraft.
