A trial has begun in the US to determine damages for the family of Michael 'Mick' Ryan, an engineer who worked for the UN World Food Programme and was killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash.

Ryan's survivors are seeking accountability from Boeing, after his widow rejected a settlement offer as 'blood money'. The company has apologized for the crashes and acknowledged that anti-stall software was implicated in both accidents.

The trial is expected to take around 12 days and will hear testimony from Ryan's family and colleagues. In 2020, Ryan's widow accepted an award from the Irish Red Cross, where she described her late husband as 'a humanitarian in every sense of the word'.
