Boeing Found Guilty of Violating Settlement Agreement Over 737 Max Crashes
The Justice Department has found that Boeing violated its settlement agreement from 2021, which allowed the company to avoid prosecution for its role in the deadly crashes of two 737 Max aircraft. The investigation was sparked by concerns over a flight-control system added to the Max without informing pilots or airlines.
Prosecutors will inform the court by July 7 on how they plan to proceed with charging Boeing, which has already faced civil lawsuits and congressional investigations following the crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.
The settlement agreement required Boeing to make changes to prevent future violations of federal anti-fraud laws. However, Glenn Leon, head of the fraud section of the Justice Department's criminal division, said that Boeing failed to meet this condition.
