Boeing Partners with Airlines to Enhance Global Air Safety

Justin Carlson, a senior director of Global Aerospace Safety at Boeing, has a unique perspective on safety. A former F/A-18 combat pilot and developmental test pilot on the F-35 program, he continues to serve as a colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves.

'Safety is a shared responsibility,' Carlson said. 'Whether it's fighters or freighters, nobody does it alone.'

Boeing's Safety Management System (SMS) serves as the foundation for its focus on safety. This data-driven approach helps identify hazards and mitigate risks. Airlines use SMS to manage operational risks in the same way Boeing does.

The Global Aerospace Safety team engages with airlines, regulators, and industry associations at various levels. They develop training programs, leverage data analytics, and provide support to customers worldwide. Carlson's team has worked with over 50 operators globally.

Boeing's partnership with its customers is a key aspect of its safety journey. The company provides face-to-face support through Flight Operations Representatives (FORs), who are highly experienced airline captains. These representatives help identify best practices and share them across the industry.
