Boeing Pays $3.1 Million Fine for MAX 9 Safety Violations

Boeing has paid a $3.1 million fine to the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) following a series of safety violations, including actions tied to the 2024 Alaska Airlines MAX 9 mid-air emergency.

The fine was not previously disclosed and was paid by Boeing in January this year after the full amount sought in September 2025. The FAA found that Boeing had interfered with safety officials' independence and presented two aircraft for agency approval that were not airworthy.

In 2024, the FAA discovered hundreds of quality system violations at Boeing's 737 factory in Renton, Washington, and the 737 fuselage factory of Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita, Kansas. A Boeing employee was found to have pressured a co-worker who was performing tasks on behalf of the FAA to sign off on a 737 MAX, despite determining that the aircraft did not comply with regulatory standards.
