Boeing Posts Contract Jobs Amid Labor Dispute
Boeing has posted contract jobs for engineering and technical roles on job sites, in what appears to be the latest escalation in its labor dispute with its white-collar union at its commercial airplane division. The move comes after members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA) overwhelmingly rejected Boeing's contract offer last Friday.
The current contract between Boeing and SPEEA is set to expire on October 6, and a strike by SPEEA's 17,000 members could further delay certification of Boeing's 737 MAX 10 and 777-9. Both jets are already years behind schedule due to certification delays.
Boeing has declined to comment on the contract job postings but stated that it wants to reach an agreement with SPEEA before the current contract expires. The company added that it is implementing a contingency plan, which will leverage a wide range of qualified resources, with a continued emphasis on safety and quality.
